Because of its affordability and today's technology concrete has become the favored building material. What was once thought of as dull and dingy and was used in areas that did not need the charm and pleasantry of the home such as driveways, walkways and basements is now upbeat and happy. Due to the use of color one can have designs on their concrete floors or any flat surface in their homes including walls. Concrete designs can go as far as making your floors, driveways and walkways look like expensive stone or be textured. All of this is affordable and wonderful but not without its concrete problems.
One source of concrete problems is water. Concrete has pockets and veins into which water can seep and cause damage to walls and floors. Using the basement walls and floor as an example you should do the following: check your gutters to be sure that they function properly and that they are not too close to the house. You do not want the water from the gutters to seep into the ground and through the outer wall into the basement where it can seep into the concrete walls or floors. If this is happening than an epoxy sealer should be used to correct it.
Another source of concrete problems can be cracked walkways and driveways. Generally, cracks in concrete are caused by improper pouring or finishing. The solution in this case is to break up the walkways and driveways and resurface. This can be costly but concrete is still more affordable than other building materials used for that purpose.
In most cases concrete problems are caused by too much water used in the mixing of the concrete or improper procedures used when pouring or drying the concrete. A do-it-yourselfer should get proper instructions in working with concrete and follow those instructions very carefully. The best way to have beautiful walkways, driveways, walls and floors is to find a professional with a good reputation to do the job. Don't just settle for a dull gray floor when you can have colorful textured concrete.
