Entry from: Khao Lak, Thailand Entry Title: "Tsunami Volunteer Centre" Entry: "One of our key goals on our travels was to develop some new skills. Sonia was especially keen to do something a little more vocational. By chance, we came across the Tsunami Volunteer Centre website and signed up for a 2 week stint doing Tsunami relief work. The centre is located in Khao Lak, on the Andaman Sea in a region which was heavily damaged by the tsunami. The first project that we were involved in was the construction of a playground in the village of Bang Klok. What greeted us was a large slab of concrete that was meant to be a basketball court and a large area of dirt overrun with weeds. Our Thai project manager was worse than useless and before long it became clear that the only way we were going to get anything done was to do it all ourselves, with no guidance or support. Actually this turned out to be a really good thing as it meant progress was quicker than if everything had had to have been done Thai style. After two weeks of digging, mixing concrete by hand, moving sand, moving rocks, more digging, collecting wood chip and general backbreaking labour, the project was almost finished. Neither of us wanted to leave the playground until it was finished so we decided to extend our two week stay ...
