Can Garage Floor Epoxy Be Applied To Concrete?

The simple answer to this question is yes. In fact, garage floor epoxy is created especially for concrete garage floors, no less. However, you just don't apply these paints into the garage floor just that. And there are concrete floors wherein these paints won't work on.

You can't apply garage floor epoxy in a sealed concrete floor. A sealed concrete floor is treated with a compound that keeps wetness and moisture out. This is usually done to protect the concrete. While the compound is normally applied on walls to keep the rain out, some builders extend the application of the sealer onto the floor. If your floor is sealed, you can't apply paint to it. To know for sure, do this simple test. Spill a glass of water onto the floor. If the water is absorbed by the cement, then the floor isn't sealed. If the water stays on top of the concrete, it means that your floor is treated. And so you can't use garage floor epoxy, or any paint for that matter, to it. You would have to remove the seal first. Else, you might have to settle for another floor covering option.

If your floor is good, the next thing is to do is to apply the paint. Again, you just don't brush the paint on the floor. You have to thoroughly clean it first. The floor should be free of any debris that could stick into the paint and floor. Clear your garage of all things inside. Then wash the floor with a power hose. Let the floor dry before applying the paint.

Know that garage floor epoxy may take some time to dry. During the summer, it could take 4 to 6 hours. In the colder months, it could take much longer. Plan your floor painting project ahead. You might want to start early so you can finish the job in a day.

A can of primer is usually applied on the floor before the actual paint. You also have to use a roller brush with an extension so you can reach far areas easily. Two coats of garage floor epoxy would be ideal. You can add more coats if you so desire. Remember that you have to let the first coat of paint dry before adding the next. After applying the epoxy paint, you should also put some paint protection compound on top as a finishing touch. It would make your garage floor paint a lot more durable.

What is Garage Floor Epoxy Paint and Does it Work

You can purchase garage floor epoxy paint at most home improvement and hardware stores as well as many online websites. There is no doubt about it, a new coat of paint on a drab concrete floor will make the space look clean and bright.

However they don't always work the way you expect. Frequently applying what may seem inexpensive paint costs more in the long run when it starts to chip and delaminate.

First a little about concrete. Concrete on grade and especially below grade like in a basement will have moisture issues. Water will run along your foundation walls and eventually get under you concrete slab. Excessive moisture pressure under the slab will start pushing moisture vapor upwards through the airholes, capillaries and cracks in the floor. Moisture vapor pushes salts upwards through the concrete as well. If you've ever noticed a perpetual dust on your concrete floor well this is the cause.

You may try and sweep the floor but to know avail, the dust keeps coming back. At this point you may figure that you've done your best trying to clean the surface and what the heck I'll just paint the floor, maybe add a few extra coats. This doesn't work since garage floor epoxy paint won't stick to dust for long. Of course it will look good when you're done but that's the last time it will look good and goes downhill from there. You may even notice within a few days a few small chips. From there it just gets worse.

There are a few solutions that will help increase the adhesion of floor paint. Start by checking your floor for signs of moisture. Put a rubber mat down on the floor or tape plastic to the surface in a few spots and wait a few days. If you find condensation or it gets wet underneath you will need an epoxy waterproof coating that works as a topical moisture barrier.

If the floor is free of moisture or is above a basement you should etch or have the floor mechanically prepped with a shotblaster or floor grinder. It is important with concrete to profile the surface area providing more floor for the paint to stick to. Many manufacturers suggest an acid etching solution. The problem with an acid etch with a liquid is that you will be applying a very diluted ineffective solution on the floor. You might feel good that you etched the surface but it probably didn't work. In addition to a diluted acid concrete is never flat. The water and acid solution will flow to the low spots having minimal impact on the high spots.

You can use a gel acid which can be rolled on providing an efficient predictable result. Gels provide an effective profile that works on the high spots as well as the low spots. Then the gel can be cleaned off.

If you will be driving on your surface keep in mind that the friction created from driving get your tires hot. Floor paints do not have the capability of handling extreme temperature changes which is why you see floor coatings come off the floor under tires. In the garage you really need a high performance system. It's worth the extra money to do it right. If your floor has low impact and is free of moisture a properly etched surface with a garage floor epoxy paint will suffice. If it doesn't perform it's likely moisture and salts causing the problem.

Your Garage Door Repair - Choosing a Service

Finding a professional to do the job isn't something you should take lightly, but by following some guidelines, you can be sure to make the right choice.

Starting with the Right Information

Before you hire someone to do your garage door repair, it is a good idea to know exactly what's wrong. If a car crashed into your garage and caused structural damage such as a large dent or a hole, then the problem is obvious.

If the problem is mechanical, either with an electric unit or a standard unit that just is not opening and closing right, try to get to the heart of the problem. The more you know about what needs to be fixed, the better choice you can make when it comes to hiring a service.

Screening Services

Even if you want your garage door repair done as soon as possible, it is still a good idea to take your time when hiring someone to do it. One great resource you can use is the Better Business Bureau. By going to their website and doing some searching, you can find contractors in your area who are accredited and have the best ratings.

From there, you can do more research on the contractors that interest you, even going so far as to call them to ask about their experience in this type of work, and if they offer guarantees. When you make your final choice, you should feel confident about it.

An Opportunity to Learn

When your garage repair is being done, you can take this time as an opportunity to learn. For instance, if a mechanical problem is being worked on, do not be afraid to ask questions about what went wrong and how you could have prevented it. If the damage is structural, watch how the work is done, and ask about materials and tools that are used. You may be able to do the job yourself the next time if you learn enough.

Hopefully you will not need a lot of garage door repair for your home, but it's good to choose wisely when you do need it. This part of your home is usually very visible, so you want to make sure that it always looks it is best, and that it functions it is best in order to ensure your convenience and safety.

A Garage Floor Covering For Ugly Concrete Flooring

Maybe you're buying a home that needs a remodel, and the garage floors look bad. Maybe you didn't even realize that your concrete could crack at all, and that if those cracks are not tended to immediately, they can make paint or other coatings almost impossible to apply. You might have had problems with flooding, the ground shifting, or any of a ton of other factors that can cause damage to your concrete in ways that really cannot be controlled. Regardless, sometimes you do need a garage floor covering.

Why Can't The Concrete Just Get Fixed?

Even though there are ways you can repair damaged concrete and paint over the cracks to make it not so noticeable, these methods always run the risk of returning cracks. In most cases, whatever caused the damage to the concrete in the beginning has a good chance of causing the problem again. As a result, the best objective is to forget about garage floor paint and purchase a covering in place of the repairs. Garage floor coverings are construed as tiles or mats. Most anything that does not coat the surface of your original concrete and adds another layer. You can use both of these coverings, but the first may not work in all situations.

Garage Floor Tiles Don't Always Work

If you plan to use tiles on a floor with only smallish cracks, you may not need to do anything with the cracks before you do. This is because tiles can grip the concrete all around the crack, instead. Because tile really isn't a coating, and is actually a separate material altogether, they may actually help hold things together and prevent expansion of old cracks as well as new ones. Just like any other coverings, the point is to cover any defects so that, while they're still there, they're not visible. Garage floor tiles are not ideal in situations where the concrete garage floor is stained, however. If you do use tiles in this case, the stains will end up "sweating", and dissolving the sticky stuff that holds the tiles to the ground. When this happens, the tiles will lose their grip, and the floor won't be in any better shape than it was before.

Garage Floor Mats Always Work

If the garage flooring is really messed up, you may have no choice but to use a mat. Luckily, mats are just as good at repelling chemicals as anything else, and they can look darn good while doing it. Unfortunately, however, you are just putting a band-aid on the problem, and it can eventually come back to bite you. If the concrete is really breaking up, it may end up with jagged corners which will tear the mat from underneath, especially when the mat is driven upon. You may not even notice just how bad the concrete is if it degrades further while covered with a mat. Should it become damaged, though, a mat can be pulled out and replaced with very little drama. That is, of course, if you can afford to purchase another one.

Your Solution May Be Predetermined...

When you think about it, the decision of what to use to for your damaged concrete is uncomplicated: using either mats or tiles is possible is tiles can stick. But if they don't for any reason, you are left with garage floor mats.
