Reinforced Concrete and How to Go About It

The concrete that is used in the buildings has to be reinforced for the purposes of making the columns that have been erected in the building firmer and the reinforced concrete is also used in the making of the foundation for the building. The reinforcement bars strengthen the concrete through the tension forces as was discovered by the engineers.

The compression assists the concrete but the steel bars strengthen the bars though the exertion of tension forces. The reinforced buildings may be reinforced using different materials such as steel bars, plates and even plastic fiber. The method of reinforcing concrete was started back in the 1850s by a contractor called Coignet Francoise. The houses that he built back then using this method, still stand today.

It was at that time that building companies started coming up using the reinforced concrete as their main building method. The popularity of the use of reinforced concrete in the construction of houses soon grew in popularity, later spreading to parts of France and later to the United States in the year 1893, through the construction company called the Pacific Coast Borax Company.

In the use as a major construction element the use of reinforced concrete may be used in making of foundations, walls or even walls. The concrete used in the making slabs and foundations differs in that some of the areas need harder concrete than others. The concrete that has been reinforced, the steel beams enable the structure to stand firm in cases such as earth quakes that cause the reinforced concrete structure to bend. Depending on the height of the structure or just generally how big the structure is, the reinforced bars vary in diameter. For sky scrapers, the reinforced bars are generally very wide and the foundation is very secure to enable the building to manage tension from factors that may cause it to bend such as the wind.

The reinforced concrete also has anti corrosion measures taken to ensure that the elements of the weather such as moisture and in some case the salt does not affect the metal palates used. A Zinc phosphate coating may be used on the metal beams and bars that have been used for reinforcement. Other structures that are made using reinforced concrete are for example bridges and highways. These structures are also very much at risk of rusts and deicing from elements such salt and exposure to moisture. The use of plastic fiber reinforcements is therefore very advisable where possible.
